Why Cape Town

Summer, while everyone else is scraping ice off the windscreen

Cape Town’s summer runs October to March, exactly opposite to Europe’s. October is spring and still fresh, around 21 to 23°C. By January it’s properly hot, mid to high twenties °C most days, and the sun doesn’t go down until nearly eight in the evening. You finish a session at eleven and still have the whole day ahead of you.

  • Jet lag isn’t a problem

South Africa runs two hours ahead of the UK and one ahead of most of mainland Europe, and it doesn’t shift for daylight saving. Cape Town sits almost directly south of Europe, so an overnight flight from London is about eleven and a half hours and you arrive with no jet lag. You land in the morning and play that afternoon. Dubai or Thailand costs you the first two days.

  • Five or six days of leave for a week you won’t forget

Depending on the flights you pick and whether you want a day at home before work, this costs you five or six days of annual leave. That’s it.

For that you get seven nights in Cape Town, twenty-two hours on court, a different court almost every day, and a sunrise from the top of a mountain. Most people spend more leave on considerably less.

  • Your money goes a long way here

The rand is the reason a week here costs what it does. Dinner at a good restaurant runs 18 to 25 dollars with wine, lunch 8 to 12, a flat white about two and a half. Every activity and entry fee on the retreat is already covered, so a realistic food and drink budget for the week is 150 to 250 dollars.

  • Everything is within an hour

Mountain, ocean, vineyards, penguins and the southwestern tip of Africa, all close to each other. Table Mountain sits inside the city. The Winelands are twenty minutes out. Very few cities put this much within reach of a single week, which is why the afternoons here are as good as the mornings.

The courts

Play under the mountain, above the Atlantic, and among the vines

Most padel holidays give you one court and a timetable. We give you the city.

Cape Town’s padel scene has grown fast, and the courts have gone up in the best parts of it: on the slopes below Table Mountain, a few streets back from the Atlantic beaches, and out among the vineyards. So rather than book one venue for the week, we move. Seven days, seven courts. Five are set, two are a surprise.

Six sessions are three hours each and the closing tournament is four, twenty-two hours in total, and no two days look the same. You’ll play a morning at Camps Bay and have lunch on the strip afterwards. You’ll play Clifton in the late light with the ocean in front of you. On day six you’ll play at a wine estate in the Durbanville hills, with a tasting and a long lunch on the farm to follow.

Every court is booked ahead for the whole group, and every transfer during the retreat is included.

Camps Bay

Morning session, then lunch on the strip and the Atlantic in front of you.

Clifton

Ocean views from the court. Sunset on the glass.

Meerendal Wine Estate

Courts looking out over the Durbanville valley and the estate dam, on a farm that has been making wine since 1702.

Seven courts in seven days. Play Cape Town, don’t just visit it.

Table Mountain
  • Table Mountain by cable car

The car rotates as it climbs, so everyone gets the full view on the way up. Flat paths along the top, and the whole peninsula laid out beneath you at sunset. No climbing involved.

  • Lion’s Head hike at sunrise

A 45-minute climb in the dark, headtorches on, and the city waking up beneath you. Anyone who can manage a steady walk uphill will make it. Nobody minds if you’d rather sleep.

  • The penguins at Boulders Beach

A colony of African penguins a few metres from the boardwalk, and False Bay water several degrees warmer than the Atlantic you’ve been swimming in all week.

  • Cape Point

The old lighthouse, the boardwalk out to the viewpoint, and the southwestern corner of the continent. There’s a funicular if you’d rather not walk it.

  • Chapman’s Peak

A hundred and fourteen curves cut into the cliff face, and a picnic laid out on the rocks with the Atlantic straight below.

  • Meerendal Wine Estate

Padel between the vines, then a tasting and a long lunch on the estate. We drive, so nobody has to hold back.

  • The farewell braai

Fire, food, South African wine, Cape gin and cold beer on the last night. No set finish time, and nobody ever wants it to end.

The coaching

World-class coaching, every single day

An hour of structured coaching every playing day, then match play in your group for the rest of the session.

Not a one-off clinic on day two, and not a week of social hits with a coach watching from the side. Every day, a coach on court, working on your game.

The hour has a purpose each time. Technique early in the week, positioning and court movement in the middle, then the shots that actually decide points here: the lob, the bandeja, and playing the walls properly instead of watching the ball die behind you. By Friday you’ll be hitting shots you couldn’t hit on Sunday.

You’re grouped by level from day one, so you’re always coached alongside people playing the same game as you. Beginners aren’t drowning. Stronger players aren’t waiting around.
